Seoul – The main opposition Democratic Party of Korea said on Thursday that a vote on a motion to impeach President Yoon Seok-yeol would be held at around 7pm on Sunday.
A bill to launch an independent legal investigation into first lady Kim Kun-hee will be voted on at the same time, according to the party.
The Democratic Party and five other small opposition parties proposed a motion to impeach the president at the plenary session of Congress at around 12:50 noon on Thursday.
At about 1 a.m. on Wednesday, 190 of the 300 lawmakers present in the National Assembly voted unanimously to pass a motion to repeal Yoon Eun-hye’s declaration of emergency martial law, after which the opposition parties jointly submitted the motion.
The impeachment motion was signed by 191 opposition members, and members of the ruling People’s Power Party did not participate. The ruling party also boycotted Thursday’s plenary session.
