Bags of broccoli florets sold at Walmart stores in 20 U.S. states are being recalled after random testing found that one sample of the product contained Listeria monocytogenes, according to a notice issued by the Food and Drug Administration earlier this week. .

The recall involves 12-ounce bags of wash-and-eat Marketside Broccoli Florets sourced from Braga Fresh in Soledad, Calif., and sold in 1,000 locations in the following states: For sale at multiple Walmart stores: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Texas, Utah, Washington and Wyoming (See here for a list of store locations.)

“The Texas Department of Health and Human Services discovered potential contamination during random sampling at a store in Texas, where one of multiple samples tested positive,” Braga said in the recall notice.

Possibly contaminated broccoli is past its best before date (December 10, 2024). Although the product is no longer available in stores, the company warns that consumers may have frozen the product for later use.

No illnesses have been reported related to the recalled products.

Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young, frail, or older people, as well as miscarriages and stillbirths. Short-term symptoms in otherwise healthy people may include fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea.
