Future wind and solar projects in India may require battery storage – just like China.

Prashant Kumar Singh, secretary of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), said the government plans to introduce a preliminary requirement that 10% of the capacity of renewable energy plants be used for storage, but said This level may increase over time. Photomagnet.

Singh made the remarks at the 21st Global Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Business Summit organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry and added that the move is aimed at resolving the intermittency issue of rapid growth in the share of clean energy in the Indian power sector to ensure all-round development Clock supply.

Recent tenders in India combining solar, wind and battery storage have shown competitive prices compared to coal-fired power plants, Singh said.

Local media quoted him as saying: “Now, with battery storage prices falling, it makes sense to go ahead and not build any stand-alone solar or wind power plants… Depending on price trends, the mandate could be as high as 30-40%.” the media said.

China made a similar move two years ago, when many provinces implemented policies requiring renewable energy projects to include energy storage before being approved and connected to the grid. Currently, more than 20 provinces require mandatory storage of 20% of the electricity generated by these projects.
