Petaling Jaya – Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government will study in detail the concerns raised by several media organizations over the proposed amendments to the Printing and Publishing Act 1984 (PPPA).
The Prime Minister promised a review in a Facebook post on Wednesday (December 4) after his senior press secretary received memos from the groups on his behalf at protest marches.
Anwar said in the post: “The government will review every protest, criticism and suggestion made through the relevant departments to ensure a positive environment for the media industry while safeguarding their rights and freedoms.”
On Wednesday morning, about 50 journalists and members of civil society groups, including the National Union of Journalists of Malaysia (NUJM), Center for Independent Journalism (CIJ) and Gerakan Independent Media (Geramm), held a march to the Parliament Buildings.
The organization subsequently submitted a memorandum opposing several legal amendments that could affect press freedom and freedom of speech.
