Under one of the clusters, hospitals treating acute and complex diseases will be retained.
The Health Bureau announced today that it is considering consolidating hospital services on Hong Kong Island into an administrative cluster.
The review will take into account population distribution, with Hong Kong Island’s population expected to decline slightly by 2041, with an increase in the number of residents aged 65 and over, despite overall population growth in Hong Kong.
The authority said it expected hospitals that treat acute and complex illnesses to be retained in the merged cluster, assuring the public that merged patients would not need to travel to other areas for treatment of common illnesses or medical appointments.
It added that the merger could increase cost-efficiency by cutting administrative costs and improving service coordination.
The proposal is part of ongoing collaboration with the Hospital Authority under the Second Hospital Development Plan, which prioritizes hospital development projects across the city.
